Canon introduces the C200 with internal 4K recording at 50p and FHD at 120p

One of the nicest news is the 4K internal RAW recording with a new format, called ” Cinema RAW Light, ” which offers the same basic quality for post-production but with lighter files.

Thanks to the dual DIGIC DV6 processor, the Canon C200 stores both 4K UHD and DCI at 50p and FullHD at 120fps without any crop on the sensor. In addition to the RAW format, more ” light ” encodings will be available up to 150Mbps for 4K and 35 Mbps for 1080p, which can be stored on standard SD in MP4, while for Cinema RAW Light, you will be using CFast 2.0. Faced with these enormous improvements over the C100 line, the absence of higher bitrate MP4 encodings, such as the C300 410Mbps All-I, rightly claims Cinema5D. Canon now plans to upgrade (free) by the first quarter of 2018, which will introduce the most efficient XF-AVC format on the C200. Focus Point is always the Dual Pixel CMOS AF, made even more efficient and accurate in inserting and recognizing faces, and more comfortable for the new screen with touchscreen functionality. The range of sensitivity extends up to 102,400 ISO, and Canon anticipates excellent performance in non-optimal light conditions. This is a feature that we find in the other brand cameras and leaves no room for the risk of disappointment. With strong light, instead, the integrated ND optical filters arrive up to a maximum of 10 stops to help control the depth of field. Thanks to the new Cinema RAW Light format, the Canan C200 comes with up to 15 dynamic range stops, so two more than the 13 guaranteed by MP4 log logging of the other brand cameras. Canon has worked closely with leading nonlinear video software vendors, so the turn will be supported soon in DaVinci Resolve and Avid Media Composer via Canon RAW Plugin.

Later it will also come on Edius Pro and Final Cut Pro X with new versions of the plugin. Strangely, we do not refer to Adobe Premiere Pro, for which we just have to wait for new information. The Canon C200 weighs 1.4 kg, a little less than the C300 mark II and only 200g plus the C100 mark II, so it remains within a range that is still comfortable for run-and-gun and for use on gimbals or Professional drones. It has integrated Wi-Fi and Ethernet, as well as fast file transfer function via FTP. Structurally it is more like the C300 than the C100 and Canon has also provided a new optional EFV-V70 accessory for those who need a better viewfinder.
