Canon PowerShot SX70 HS: 65x optical zoom, 4K movies

Canon Powershot SX70 HS

After the boom of the beginning of the century, compact cameras have seen their market drastically reduced, largely eroded by smartphones. However, there are some niches that have managed to resist: among them, we find certainly the rugged and the superzoom.

The former can shoot in contexts where you can extract from your pocket more than a thousand euros may not be a sensible idea, the latter offer a very high optical zoom. In this second category the new Canon PowerShot SX70 HS is positioned.

The lens does not change compared to the previous model SX60 HS: we find a lens 3.8-247 mm f/3.4 – f/6.5 (equivalent in 35 mm format at the focal lengths 21-1365 mm) with 65x zoom stabilized up at 5 stops, but there are several improvements that justify the release of a new model.

The CMOS sensor type 1 / 2.3 backlit is now credited with effective 20.3 megapixels and is managed by the latest DIGIC 8 processor and can shoot at 10 fps. It can record 4K movies of 3,840×2,160 pixels at 30/25 fps.

A very interesting improvement is the adoption of a new sight with a 2.36 million dot OLED panel, of a decidedly superior quality compared to the previous model with 922k points. The camera offers wireless Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections and a swiveling articulated rear display.
