Dyson Lightcycle Morph: The lamp that transforms itself by changing the lighting

Dyson Lightcycle Morph

For some time, the Dyson brand has made itself known on the market with its suction solutions, both flush and without, based on a cyclonic system. The operating logic does not foresee that the sucked dirt ends up in a collection bag, but that through a cyclonic filter is collected in a special container.

The Dyson brand is also known for ventilation systems, not based on traditional fans but Air Multiplier technology: the air is sucked by an impeller inside the device, which then pushes it through an opening with a circular crown geometry to increase its speed.

More recently, the company has gone into the lighting sector with Lightcycle, a table model based on LED technology that manages the light intensity according to the environmental conditions and the type of activity that is carried out under lighting.

With an event in Milan, Dyson announced Lightcycle Morph, a new evolution of its lighting system. The name Morph summarizes the ability of this product to change, adapting to the different needs of use, exploiting for this its 360 ° maneuverability, in these ways:

To obtain this flexibility of use, Dyson intervened both on the design and the lighting part. The first provides an aluminum body with a tilting structure that allows you to position the light source close to what we want to illuminate. Not only that: the lamp block can rotate 360 degrees to be turned towards the area we want to be hit by the light beam.

To make up the lighting part, we find in the structure 3 LED with warm light and as many with cold light, whose operation is constantly governed by Dyson’s proprietary algorithm, Dailight Tracking, which takes into account the environmental conditions and the natural light of the place where we are located to provide lighting with the ideal color temperature.

There are two references to the world of consumer electronics and information technology in Lightcycle Morph: the first is the presence of a USB-C port at the base of the lamp, with which to be able to recharge mobile devices.

The second is the use of a heat pipe-based LED heat dissipation system, thanks to which heat is transferred away from the LED, thus avoiding that their overheating leads to a change in the color temperature of the light beam emitted. An infrared motion sensor turns the light on when you approach it and turns it off if no one is in its vicinity for five minutes, thus helping to save energy.

The interaction with an APP, accessible from a smartphone or tablet, allows you to configure Lightcycle Morph in different ways.

More generally, using the data of millions of satellite detections of light conditions in the Earth’s atmosphere at different times of the day, a 32-bit microprocessor integrated with the Dyson Lightcycle Morph lamp constantly interprets these data on daylight, communicating them to the driver optical. The latter powers the 3 warm light LED, and the 3 cold light LED, which work together to simulate the color temperatures of daylight between 2,700 and 6,500 degrees Kelvin.
