21.5 inches with IPS panel, curved and for gaming: These are the most popular PC monitors

The most popular screens have a 21.5-inch diagonal and IPS-type panel: IDC outlines the PC display market, stable in sales but increasingly oriented towards premium solutions.

They have a diagonal of 21.5 inches and are based on IPS technology: these are the technical characteristics of the most common monitors on the market, according to the most-recent analysis formulated by IDC on the subject.

These are not excessively high dimensions, compatible with the main domestic and office environments, but which tend to increase over the next few years due to the interest of users in moving towards models with a larger diagonal. By 2023, IDC itself estimates that most of the screens sold will have a diagonal of 23.8 inches, thanks also to a gradual fall in prices.

It is also significant to see how IPS-type LCD panels are gradually replacing those based on TN and VA technologies: the overall quality they provide is appreciated by users, especially in terms of a greater viewing angle.

Approximately 50% of the LCD panels are based on IPS technology: where TN continues to maintain an important share, it is in models with a very high vertical refresh rate (up to 240 Hz), although IPS technology is taking up space also in this specific area.

IDC expects that in 2019 a total of 122 million PC displays will be sold, a figure slightly down (-1%) compared to last year. During the second quarter of 2019, around 30 million screens were sold, with a certain emphasis on models with superior features in the form of curved panels and functions specifically linked to the gaming world, such as supporting particularly high refresh rates.

Sales of curved monitors increased by just under 45% during the second quarter of 2019; of these, about half have specific technical characteristics for the gamers’ market, confirming how this sector continues to drive sales.

Dell maintains its first position among global producers during the second quarter of 2019, with 21.4% of the total market. Next we find HP with 15.2% and TPV with 14.4%; Lenovo is in fourth place with 10% and LG closes in fifth with 8.2%. The remaining 30% of the market is held by all the other players in the sector, whose number remains high.
