5G, Samsung marks a new speed record: 8.5 Gbps

Samsung claims to have reached a new speed target (8.5 Gbps) on the 5G network in a laboratory demonstration, combining the 800 MHz mmWave spectrum and the MU-MIMO technology.

Samsung Electronics announced that it had reached the highest speeds on the 5G network in a laboratory demonstration that combined the 800 MHz mmWave spectrum (millimeter waves) with MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) technology.

Using two mobile test devices, the demonstration reached a speed of approximately 4.3 Gbps on each, reaching a peak of 8.5 Gbps on both devices. To achieve this speed, Samsung explained that it had used two technologies: carrier aggregation and MU-MIMO.

The bandwidth of the mmWave spectrum allows mobile operators to deliver speeds of several gigabits per second that the lower bands cannot guarantee. At these speeds, according to the South Korean company, mobile operators will be able to provide new and richer services such as 8K video streaming, virtual reality teleconferencing, remote learning through augmented reality, and other new use cases not yet imagined.

To date, several countries have already assigned the 5G mmWave spectrum, and two of these have already launched commercial services that exploit this spectrum.
