The month of July begins in the name of Samsung, this time we do not speak. Smartphone, tablet or TV. We deal with Solid-State Disk Electronics Division. As mentioned in the last hour got underway in Seoul the Samsung SSD Global Summit 2014, an international event that we are following live, with the announcement of the entire 2014 line-up storage that will follow later in the day.
As the title suggests, we start with a preview Interestingly, the new SSD range top Korean company (for the end consumer) Samsung 850 Pro. Heir to the excellent 840 Pro, the new Samsung SSD introduces interesting new features that we will describe below, along of course with a glimpse of the performance. For more extensive testing, we refer to the next few days, as soon as we have the time to get even more detail.
Samsung SSD 850 Pro – Specifications
Let’s start by saying that the Samsung SSD 850 Pro is the first in the world to use 3D Memory V-NAND 32-layer; the company had already made (and sold) the V-chip 3D NAND 24-layer for the enterprise market / server, but in this case offers an interesting update that allows you to further increase the density of its storage unit.
As you know, compared to the 2D planar NAND (for instance, instance those used on previous generation SSDs), the Memoirs 3D V-NAND possible to increase the density in the same area occupied. The latest variant of the Samsung 32-Layer further enhances this aspect and, at the same time, improves the write performance, efficiency and durability than the ” old ” 20nm NAND, among others, present on the Samsung 840 Pro.
It is no coincidence that the Samsung SSD 850 Pro will be available in denominations of 128, 256, 512 GB, 1 TB to get to. In addition, according to the state house, the improvements will be more visible on the model with smaller cut (128 GB) that, unlike in the past, will not be ” castrated ” compared to older siblings.
In the second shows the performance of the official declared by the company. In addition to the marked improvement in the entry-level 128GB model (the model 840 Pro amounted to 520-390 MB / s), we also notice a performance boost QD1 which in practice are closer to the use of the average really.
In addition to the 3D Memory V-NAND 32-Layer, which permit an offer of 1TB drives, detach the controller owner 3 Core-MEX (further revision of the MDX), the MTBF of 2 million hours and support mode DEVSLP that reduces fuel consumption by up to 2 mW.
We currently have no data on the frequency of the controller MEX (remember that from MCX MDX there was an increase of 80 MHz), while for the option DEVSLP the Korean company has thought about the new generation of mobile devices, especially ultra-slim ultrabook, which hit the market in the coming months on Intel Broadwell to 14nm.
On the front, we guarantee a pleasant surprise. The Samsung 850 Pro will boast 10 years for this single product. The others in the line-up instead continue to have a 5 year warranty. Finally, do not forget to point out that the Samsung 850 Pro, thanks to the latest version of the software owner Magician supports the mode Mode RAPID (Real-time Accelerated Processing of I / O Data), proprietary solution, which basically allows you to double the performance of the drive using the System RAM.
Test and Performance
As already mentioned at the beginning, we will propose a series of preliminary tests, which follow another evidence; in particular, the second part of the test, which will arrive in the coming days, will focus primarily on how Rapid Mode, using the latest version of the utility Samsung Magician.
Meanwhile, here’s the first performance graphs confirming that, even without a gap so marked, the new Samsung 850 Pro is without a doubt the valid successor by 840 Pro; this especially if we consider that we are dealing with an SSD firmware yet to be optimized.
Samsung SSD 850 Pro – Conclusions.
We’ll talk more on the cost of each denomination. We anticipate that the availability date has been announced and is only three weeks away from today. The Samsung SSD 850 Pro will be officially on the market.
Returning to the behavior of the SSD, on the other hand, we can say that even without a particular boost in terms of absolute performance, the Korean company has been able to optimize various aspects of the Samsung 840 Pro, a product certainly not easy to improve without a transition to new standard M.2.
The Samsung 840 Pro, in our opinion, can only get better as the firmware will be further refined to fully exploit the features of the new V-3D NAND memories paired with the new controller MEX. As mentioned in the article, we refer then to the second series of tests where we will see how the behavior of the unit when we use the mode Rapid Mode.
