DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom: Here is the new generation of drones

DJI presented the new generation of drones of the Mavic series: the new Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom bring improvements all-round to the previous generation, starting with a more capable photographic sector.

The evolution of the prosumer drones continues constantly and there are many novelties presented by DJI during today’s press conference. DJI Mavic 2 is the name of two new drones that the Chinese company launched today: DJI Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom are the two heirs of the well-known DJI Mavic Pro, whose strengths reside in the reduced dimensions side by side from a respectable technical department.

The new generation inherits the compact dimensions that allow drones to be stored in backpacks and bags and thus facilitate transport. While maintaining a similar design, the aerodynamics has been improved and this, together with new propellers and more powerful engines, contributes to obtaining an efficiency of 19% higher than the previous model. This improved efficiency translates into a 31-minute flight time, with a top speed of 70 km/h.

DJI focuses on image quality and collaborates with Hasselblad, which provides two different sensors: on the one hand, a 1-inch CMOS sensor with 20-megapixel resolution, 10-bit color depth and 2.8-inch lens – 11 for Mavic 2 Pro; on the other a 12 megapixel 1/2.3 ” sensor with lens equipped with 2x optical zoom (with focal lengths of 24-48 mm) for Mavic 2 Zoom. The company has announced that it is possible to switch from an ‘other turning to service centers. The cameras are placed on a three-axis gimbal.

You can record movies up to 4K resolution on both devices, with a maximum bitrate of 100 Mbps and codec h.265. The photo mode also offers the possibility to take shots in HDR mode, obtained directly from the drone uniting different photographs with different exposure.

The storage of contents can be entrusted to the internal memory of 8 GB or to a microSD card inserted in the appropriate slot, which can read cards with capacities up to 128 GB. The choice on the storage device to be used is up to the user. Furthermore, the photographs taken by the drone are directly transferred to the connected device for immediate sharing.

The OcuSync 2.0 video connection works on both the 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz band, with an automatic change from one to the other depending on the situation. Transmission and reception take place on two distinct frequencies so as to minimize interference. The video transmission with 1080p resolution reaches up to 8 km away without obstacles or interference.

The assisted driving mode, which uses 10 different cameras placed on all sides of the drone, allows the drone to be aware of the obstacles around and to actively avoid them to allow continuous shooting. You can track the subject even when it is behind an obstacle, as the Mavic 2 studies the trajectory and manages to anticipate it for a time that reaches up to 3 seconds.

DJI Mavic 2 Pro DroneThere are six different QuickShot shooting modes: Dronie, Circle, Helix, Rocket, Boomerang and Asteroid. The Mavic 2 Zoom is also equipped with the Dolly Zoom mode, which allows you to move the drone while zooming, leaving the subject unaltered but changing the surrounding landscape to create a cinematic effect.

In addition to these modes, there are four more that allow shooting timelapse (which DJI calls ” Hyperlapse ” ) automatically: Free (manual flight), Circle (circular trajectory around the subject), Course Lock (flight in a straight line keeping the framing on the subject) and Waypoint (establishes the stages of the flight).

DJI Mavic 2 Pro can be purchased for $1,449, while DJI Mavic 2 Zoom is available for $1,249. Both devices are already available starting now.
