DJI Storm: The professional drone for directors has been unveiled

The new professional DJI Storm drone is designed for filmmakers who want to be able to shoot aerial footage with particularly heavy video cameras such as RED Cinema or Arri Alexa. Thanks to DJI they can now lift up to 18.5 kg.

DJI Storm is the new drone dedicated to video footage that the Chinese producer has unveiled, with little fanfare, these days. The news is that it will probably not be possible to buy a drone of this type, but only rent it for the necessary footage.

DJI Storm is a highly advanced and expensive solution that promises to be able to carry very heavy video cameras (such as RED Digital Cinema or Arri Alexa LF) as well as stabilization systems such as DJI Ronin 2.

The features of this drone include the ability to lift up to 18.5 kg (40.8 lb) and fly at almost 80 km/h top speed (sport mode) or 60 km/h in GPS mode. DJI Storm can also fly for 8 or 15 minutes depending on the batteries chosen and integrated inside the drone (also due to the weight of the accessory load).

Performance is made possible by 8 large rotors (M10 100-10 KV120, made by DJI) with specially designed supports and far more powerful than those of the DJI Matrice 600, which is considered ” almost ” small compared to the new DJI Storm. The drone can also operate in difficult conditions with temperatures from -10°C to 40°C.

DJI Storm DroneThe price of the new DJI Storm is not publicly known but as originally written, it will probably be a rental service (an estimated cost for the equipment could exceed $30,000 with the only Ronin 2 stabilization system that costs around the $800,0).

It also appears that DJI will send its own team on-site when the drone is needed to ensure maximum support (as can be seen at the end of the video at the beginning of the news). One of the few companies to have tried it at present is Helinet Aviation in the USA, while new rental programs could arrive around the world by the end of the year.
