Double bandwidth for the PCIe 5.0 standard, debuting in 1 year

The first devices compatible with the PCI Express 4.0 will debut this year, but already for 2020 the new PCI Express 5.0 interface debut with a doubling of bandwidth.

During the course of 2019, the first solutions based on the PCI Express 4.0 standard will officially debut, a new evolution of the connection interface used for video cards and for the fastest peripherals in both the consumer and server systems.

The 4.0 specifications foresee a doubling of the maximum transmission speed, opening space in this way to the next generations of video cards. The first systems compatible with PCI Express 4.0 specifications have already been anticipated by AMD: the Ryzen and EPYC processors built with 7-nanometer production technology, respectively for consumer and server systems, will integrate a controller of this type inside.

On the horizon, faces a new standard, the PCI Express 5.0: PCI-SIG, the organization that defines the specifications of this interface, has indeed announced that it has ratified in recent days the specific PCI Express 5.0 coming to the release 0.9. The goal is to complete their definition by the end of the first quarter of 2019, so as to make them potentially available for new products starting from the end of the year.

If in the transition from the standard PCI Express 3.0 to the 4.0 you get a doubling of the bandwidth, which goes from 32 GB/s to 64GB/s with a 16x connection, the PCI Express 5.0 standard would bring this data up to 128 GB/s always with 16x link.

The short time gap between the 4.0 standard and the one foreseen for the debut of the 5.0 peripherals is linked to the delay in the debut of the first, which followed that of the PCI Express 3.0 interface much more than the typical 2 years that historically separate the definition of new specifications by the PCI-SIG.
