Google cancels Chrome 82, jumps to version 83: Unveiled the new lineup

Chrome and Chrome OS will go from version 81 to 83, skipping version 82. Google has announced the new distribution times and development methods for the browser and operating system. The work done on version 82 will be incorporated into 83.

Google is preparing to return to update Chrome and Chrome OS. After pausing the updates last week, blocking the release of version 81, the company has given itself a new lineup that has communicated through the official blog.

The stop to the release of new releases had come as a result of the fact that many engineers and developers were forced to work from home due to the restrictions related to Coronavirus, with limited resources and unable to intervene in the best way to correct any bugs, small or large, which can sometimes accompany new software versions.

Evidently, at Google, they preferred to take a few days to understand how to manage the situation, adapt to the new reality, and get back on track. Google explains in the blog that release 83 will arrive ” three weeks earlier than planned ” and will include ” all work from version 82, which has been canceled (on all channels). He immediately resumed his activity on the Canary, Dev, and Beta development channels, with version 83 moving to the Dev branch and 81 continuing his test path in the Beta branch.

The Stable channel, the one in which the versions then distributed to all users arrive, will resume activity next week with the publication of some security fixes and not only for version 80, followed by the publication of version 81 during the week of April 7 and 83 in mid-May.

We will share more details on the timing of the M84 branch and releases in a future update. We continue to carefully monitor the stability, security, and reliability of Chrome and Chrome OS. […] We thank you for the help and patience in this period.

Google isn’t the only company that has paused for the development of new versions of its software due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Microsoft has blocked the distribution of Edge 81 and has communicated that starting from May, it will not distribute the optional cumulative updates for Windows for some time, because it may not be able to follow any problems, on the other hand, in order not to create problems for its customers forced to smart working.
