Olympus Tough TG-6: photos up to 15 meters deep

The new Olympus Tough TG-6, designed to go under water without external housing up to a depth of 15 meters, to withstand falls from heights up to 2.1 meters, to operate at temperatures, wants to continue on the path traced by the previous models. up to 14°F (-10°C) and to be non-deformable when crushing weights up to 100 kg.

The segment of compact cameras has suffered greatly from the success of smartphones and the progressive evolution of their photographic abilities. In this sector, the producers have pulled the oars into the boat, further accelerating the obsolescence of compact cars, the development of which – unlike that of the cameraphone – has been stopped for some time.

While advancing in small technological steps, within the compact category, there is a family of cameras that continues to maintain its position, that of the rugged, cameras resistant to everything, which can be carried and exploited where no one would risk the safety of a top-end smartphone for more than a thousand dollars.

Olympus Tough TG-6

The new Olympus Tough TG-6, designed to go under water without an external case up to a depth of 15 meters, to resist falling from heights up to 2.1 meters, to operate at temperatures up to 14°F (-10°C) and to be non-deformable when crushing weights up to 100 kg.

Compared to the rest of the sector, here we are witnessing a behavior in contrast, with sensors that lose megapixels in favor of a wider pixel pitch and greater sensitivity to low lights. The Olympus Tough TG-6 relies on a 12 megapixel 1/2.33″ backlit CMOS sensor, much less than a few generations ago. Sensitivity can be set between 100 and 12,800 ISO.

The camera offers a 4x non-protruding zoom lens of 25-100mm equivalent with f/2.0-4.9 aperture and macro focusing at minimum focal length starting from 1 centimeter from the front lens. To manage the interface and the processing of the images, we find the TruePic VIII processor, stolen from the mirrorless top of the OM-D E-M1X range. Photographers also have the possibility to save photos in RAW format among the tools.

Particular is the Field Sensor System, with which Olympus allows you to store log data such as the position, altitude or depth and also the temperature of the air or water while taking pictures or shooting videos. The latter can be recorded in 3,840×2,160 4K pixel format at 30p and 25p with a bitrate of about 102 Mbps.

The new Olympus Tough TG-6 will be available in red and black at the beginning of June at a target price of $449.
