Real-time translation arrives on Google Assistant

Google’s virtual assistant is now able to translate sentences in real-time and to suggest answers to simplify communication between different languages.

One of the great long-term promises of modern technology is to translate conversations between individuals who speak different languages in real-time. Google could be the first reality to be able to keep this promise, thanks to a Google Assistant feature called Interpreter mode.

This is a feature previously present on Google Home and Nest devices, and which has now found a place on any smartphone, Android or iOS that are, where Google Assistant is present.

Simply turn to the virtual assistant and say, for example, ” Hey Google, help me speak French ” or ” become my French translator ” to activate the functionality. At this point, Google Assistant will quickly show the translation of what has been pronounced, communicate it verbally and also propose a series of contextual prepackaged answers that the user can choose to speed up the conversation.

And in case you find yourself in an environment where tranquility and silence are required, you can also use the keyboard.

The functionality has already been made available and works with 44 languages, including Italian. As already mentioned, availability is for both Android and iOS even if for the latter case, the update does not seem to be yet available at the time of writing: in the first case, Assistant is integrated into the operating system, as regards smartphones Apple will instead need to download the Google Assistant app from the App Store.
