Sony lenses: two models for the new APS-C cameras.

In addition to the new A6600 and A6100 mirrorless, two new Sony E-series E lenses were also presented. It is a 16-55 mm zoom lens with f/2.8 aperture and a 70-350 mm super-telephoto lens.

Today, two new APS-C cameras were presented by the Japanese manufacturer (A6600 and A6100) but also two Sony lenses suitable for this format, thus expanding the portfolio that touches 54 models with E.

The two new Sony lenses are both zoom lenses but with very different characteristics. What they have in common are the attack (which is obviously the ” E ” ) and also that they are optics of the G series. In particular, we are talking about the 16-55 mm F2.8 G model and the much more powerful (in terms of maximum magnification) E 70-350 mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS.

Sony E 16-55 mm F2.8 G

The first of the Sony lenses for APS-C that we will talk about is E 16-55 mm F2.8 G (model code SEL1655G). It is one of the zoom with magnification considered ” standard ” but that has the advantage of having a constant aperture of f/2.8, higher than the cheaper models. Sony has come up with this solution as an all-round optic, moving from landscapes to portraits to contain size and weight.

Inside the E 16-55 mm F2.8 G we find two advanced aspherical elements and two aspherical elements that allow to reduce aberrations without losing in resolution. Then there are three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that allow you to disperse less light and keep a color true to the real scene. There is also a cover in nanocrystals that correct defects such as those generated by stray light. The front glass is instead protected with a fluorine coating.

As far as the diaphragm is concerned, it is composed of 9 blades and allows for a soft gradient (especially useful for portraits). As written above, the weight is reduced to 494 grams.

The optical part is then moved (for automatic focusing) by a linear motor XD (acronym of Extreme Dynamic) and which is already successfully used on the G Master series. On the body, there is also the button for locking the focus (customizable). The lens body is protected from dust and moisture so it can be used even in difficult conditions.

  • Standard zooms with outstanding corner-to-corner G lens resolution
  • Constant F2.8 Max aperture maintains exposure and depth of field
  • Two advanced aspherical plus two aspherical elements suppress aberration

Sony E 70-350 mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS: The super telephoto lens for APS-C

The second of the Sony lenses that has been presented is the ” super telephotoE 70-350 mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS (model SEL70350G). This model goes to up to 525 mm if we consider the 35 mm equivalents allowing us to shoot even very distant from subjects.

Despite its performance, Sony has tried to work to make it as compact and lightweight as possible (625 grams) so as to also allow easy portability. The work has been made more difficult also by the presence of the integrated image stabilization (SteadyShot) which is fundamental, pushing itself so far with the magnification.

The optical design of this model includes an aspherical element to eliminate optical aberration while maintaining high resolution. Then there are three high dispersion lenses (ED) that instead reduce chromatic aberrations both in the central area and on the edges.

The new E 70-350 mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS then has a linear XD motor suitable for APS-C lenses, ensuring fast and precise autofocus, according to the manufacturer. Also in this case there is the focus lock button to which other functions can be assigned that can be recalled with just one click. Obviously, it could not miss an anti-dust and moisture construction ensuring the possibility of use in difficult conditions.

Sony Alpha 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS Super-Telephoto APS-C Lens
  • Telephoto zoom with outstanding corner-to-corner G lens resolution
  • Lightweight (22oz.) remarkably Easy to handle 5x super-telephoto zoom
  • 70-350Mm (105-525mm full-frame equiv.) super-telephoto zoom
