The Sony RX10 IV: Ever more power, more and more expensive

In the rumor environment, the other day, Sony was rumored to be an imminent presentation by Sony and thought of Alpha 7 III.

The Sony RX10 IV, the fourth incarnation of this bridge, has come to its place with the strong vocation for the video. The technical features include a 1″ sensor with a resolution of 20MP, but with Stacked technology that incorporates DRAM into the chip, BIONZ X processor, reviewed auto focus that now counts up to 315 points per phase detection (65% coverage of the frame ) and that it boasts of the fastest AF in the world (0.03 seconds).

Speaking of the lens we are faced with a very wide optic range from 24mm to 600mm (35mm) with f / 2.4 af / 4 aperture, really impressive. The burst now rises to 24 frames per second (virtually a video) with active AE and AF and is maintained up to 249 photos (about 11 seconds). Going to the video side, the RX10 IV has the ability to record in 4K to 30fps using the entire sensor and is also capable of reaching 120fps in FullHD.

Also interesting is the Super Slow Motion feature, which allows you to record at 1000fps (then reproducing at 50p), and the auto focus video algorithm, updated to be 2 times faster than the old model. The display is always 3 ” with 1.44MP resolution, tilt and touch screen, and there is also a 2.35MP OLED screen viewfinder. The Sony bridge is dust-proof and sketchy, has Wi -Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.

Sony RX10 IVSony RX10 IV: Features and Opinions

Looking at the technical features of this new model, we notice the extreme speed, improved compared to the past, and which guarantees even higher performance. In fact, if the old Sony RX10 III was able to focus in 0.09 seconds, the Sony RX10 IV takes only 0.3 seconds, becoming the fastest super-zoom compact camera in the second Sony category.

Sony RX10 IVThis speed is made possible thanks to the inclusion of High-Density Tracking AF technology, typical of the well-known Alpha line featuring the best mirrorless Sony, capable of tracking moving subjects. Always talking about speed, which is the main feature on which the company is currently targeting and, which makes the Sony RX10 IV unique, thanks to the integrated Bionz X processor, the camera is able to get 24fps in burst mode up to 249 images in succession (the previous model came to 14 fps).

Sony RX10 IVThis factor makes this model also great for sporting and naturalistic photography, with the added value of the built-in lens that covers a focal length of 24-600mm with aperture f 2.4-4.

As for the other features on the Sony RX10 IV, we find a 1-inch 20.1-megapixel sensor in line with the Sony RX series of super-zoom cameras. The 3-inch LCD display is finally touch-screen and tilt with which you can also select the focus point. Many of you will find it useful to insert Sony’s WhiteMagic technology, already tested on Xperia smartphones, which allows you to see the screen perfectly even in conditions of strong external brightness.

Sony RX10 IVImprovements over the previous model also include a Bluetooth module that goes beyond the WiFi chip and NFC technology for a full-round connection. The XGA OLED Tru-Finder was also improved by 2.35 million points not so much for its quality (which remained the same) but for the speed with which the image is now being dramatically improved and avoids lags.

This phenomenon is very important to consider on a camera with an EVF, and we have also talked about it in our camera viewfinder guide. The video part regarding the quality has remained almost identical to that of the previous model: here, too, there is the ability to record movies in 4K to 24 / 30p or Full HD at 120fps.

The novelty, we find now is supported by S-Log2 / S-Gamut 2 and S-Log3 / S-Gamut 3. The super slow motion function could not fail, which allows to record 960fps movies for a slowdown of the unique and ultra-professional action.
