Surface Duo amazes everyone: From Microsoft a folding smartphone with Android

An announcement that is hard to believe what comes from Microsoft, but it is only the goal of a long and tiring journey. The company has announced a folding smartphone with Android and that’s all there is to know.

Microsoft’s last surprise at the New York event on October 2nd was certainly the most incredible. It is hard to believe that, finally and after years of hesitation, the Redmond company has released a smartphone with Android.

But he did, and what we could see on the stage of the event has a very interesting potential. But we will have to wait until the summer season of 2020 before seeing it on the market.

The design of Microsoft Surface Duo is similar to that of Surface Neo announced just a few minutes earlier, but presented in an even smaller form factor. The smartphone adopts two side-by-side screen, each of 5.6″, put together by a hinge capable of a complete 360° rotation. In this way, it is possible to open the device like a book, or close it using only a display as if was a smartphone.

Microsoft returns to the smartphone market with Surface Duo

Surface Duo is a smartphone, as it has a fully functional telephone module and can be used as a common cell phone. Each display can run an app at a given time, totally separate from what happens on the other display. The user will thus be able to manage two apps at the same time, or will be able to rotate the device using it in ” landscape ” mode.

In this mode, the secondary display can be used as if it were a keyboard or a game controller. In terms of software we have Android, which is extremely customized to resemble Windows 10X, presented with Surface Neo. The smartphone as Panos Panay pointed out during the official launch, will be able to run any application in the Android ecosystem.

According to what Wired specifies, which had a first contact with the device, Surface Duo implements the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processors, but some components have not yet been finalized. The one shown on stage is a sort of prototype in an embryonic stage and represents the vision of Microsoft’s future with regard to the category of smartphones designed for mobile productivity.

It is, in other words, Microsoft’s return to the smartphone market.
