TappLock: The smart lock that opens with the fingerprint

The sensors for fingerprint recognition are becoming increasingly popular in the smartphone arena, but the application areas are much more extensive and include commonly used items such as padlocks.

The safety systems based on the recognition of biometric parameters are becoming more common in the consumer technology industry. Smartphones are a good example of how security technologies, until a few years ago reserved for specific niche markets, today are applicable on a larger scale.

Companies like Apple and Microsoft have helped to clear the security systems based on fingerprint scanning, facial and iris (think of Touch ID and Windows Hello), pulling a sector that has hardly failed to respond with proposal’s alternatives.

Biometric sensors have a particularly wide scope and a recent project presented through crowdfunding site Indiegogo helps demonstrate this assumption.

TappLock is the name of the lock ” smart ” developed by Pishon Lab, which can be unlocked through fingerprint recognition. It comes in two versions, one of larger size, integrates a battery that provides a charge of three years and can recharge the smartphone, the second, TappLock Lite, a smaller format, offering six months of battery life.

Both are in the integration of the fingerprint sensor on the main distinctive feature. To a ” smart ” device, of course, you cannot miss the opportunity to interact with smartphones: the developers have planned special app for Android, iOS and Windows 10 through which you can proceed to open the lock, as an alternative to scanning of footprint.

The advantages compared to traditional padlocks are reflected in the lack of the need to use a key that can be lost or stolen. The disadvantages are related to the reliability of any electronic device. The locks, as evident in the video, are pretty robust and a malfunction in the release management circuit may be a significant problem.

The authors of the project ensure you have used top-level components, starting from the sensor for recognizing fingerprints – the FPC 1020 – usually integrated into high-end smartphones. According to the declared data, the lock release would occur in just 0.8 seconds.

The locks are equipped with an alarm system that is activated in case of attempted violation and Bluetooth’s interface, through which communicate with smartphones using the protocol cryptographic AES 128-bit.

Like any project presented on Indiegogo, pre-product orders are some risks to the actual finalization. At the time, the goal of the $ 40,000 needed to kick off the production has been achieved, the price of TappLock Lite is equal to $29, while the larger is proposed at $49, the estimated delivery date coincides with the month September 2016.
