The new firmware of January for Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3

Microsoft continues to fine-tune the performance of the Surface tablet line releasing new firmware for Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3. The upgrades introduce fixes and stability improvements.

Microsoft does not remove support for the Surface tablet line, releasing new firmware for Surface 3 and Surface Pro 3. The new releases – both marked by the date of publication 19/1 – were released over the weekend and introduce the inevitable series of fixes and performance improvements. As pointed out below, are not lacking some instability emerged following the updating of the Surface Pro 3 and firmware related, apparently, to an incompatibility with the Surface Pen driver.

The house of Redmond has clarified in detail the new features that include, as regards the Surface 3 firmware :

Driver update Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth (v15.68.9037.59), improves compatibility with the access point and the 5GHz band.
Driver update Surface Digitizer Integration (v1.0.1.1) improves the pairing with the latest Surface pen functionality.
Driver Update Surface Pen Pairing (v1.0.1.1) improves the pairing with the latest Surface Pen functionality.
Driver Update Audio device (v604.10135.7777.2109), enhances the audio quality with some applications.
Driver update I2S Audio Codec (v6.2.9600.527) improves sound quality with some applications.

The changes introduced with the new Surface Pro 3 firmware include :

Update Surface Pro Embedded Controller Firmware (v38.9.50.0) improves reliability system boot.
Update Surface Pro UEFI (v3.11.1150.0) adds support to the pen in UEFI menu and improves support for third-party keyboards onscreen.
Driver Update Surface Fingerprint sensor (v2.2.10.6) improves accuracy. driver update Wireless Network Controller and Bluetooth (v15.68.9037.59) improves compatibility with the access point and the 5 GHz band.
Driver Update 4331 HD Graphics Family (v20.19.15.4331) improves color calibration and system stability.

To complete the update process of the new firmware, simply use Windows Update and make manual checks on the presence of the update.

As mentioned in the beginning, as a result of the update, some users report a series of instability on Surface Pro 3. Pending further fix is reported the possibility of temporarily work around the problem by resetting the Surface Pen Settings driver, the version of October 2015 that of March 2015. to do this, simply follow the path: right click on the Start button > device Manager > Human Interface device (HID) > Surface Pen Settings > properties > Roll Back Driver.
