Toshiba announces a new 1TB HDD for laptops, model MQ04

Inside the mobile PCs of economic range we find almost only mechanical hard drives. That’s why we recommend the presentation of a HDD all in all ” normal “, but that goes to update the Toshiba range for this sector.

The presentation of a mechanical hard disk, all in all, without any particular excellence, is certainly no more news than a few years ago: the attention, in the world of storage, is practically all about Solid-State Drive solutions. Yet the data are clear: the largest share of the market was and remains driven by mechanical hard drives, characterized by very high capacity and a cost per GB far lower than that of SSD.

It is not surprising that almost all portable PCs are equipped with a mechanical hard disk, usually in 500GB or 1TB cuts (when we write, these figures could be really limiting in a while). These units cost producers between $30 and $50, thus positively influencing the final price of the complete PC. Using a SSD, even smaller, would immediately place a low-end PC off the market.

What Toshiba already presents and sells from today is a mechanical hard disk after all normal, MQ04 series, but that will be used in many portable PCs that will circulate around the world now and then. It is a 2.5-inch SATA with a thickness of 7mm that uses only one mechanical plate, but has a capacity of well 1TB.

The rotation speed is 5400rpm, while the differences with the model that replaces are in a greater reactivity and general performance not declared. Expected sales volumes unthinkable for any SSD that may come to your mind.
