Windows 7 almost at the end of life, but one-year free extended support for some realities

The end of support is approaching for Windows 7, but companies will be able to take advantage of a one-year extension for free security updates. That’s how.

Windows 7 is rapidly coming to the end of support, planned for January 14 next year. This means that consumer users remaining at the old version of the operating system will no longer receive security updates. On the other hand, companies will be able to extend support for up to three years, even if only for a fee.

The price of the continued support was announced a few months ago in the past few days, a part of Microsoft documentation was discovered in which the possibility of accessing updates for a year after the end of the free support is described. The promotional initiative seems only for some companies.

The document states that companies that have an active subscription to Windows 10 E5, Microsoft 365 E5 or Microsoft 365 E5 Security on December 31, 2019 will automatically get an additional year of security updates on Windows 7. The promotion is valid for any account who has activated one of the subscriptions on the date mentioned regardless of when the season ticket was started.

No operation is foreseen by users or administrators: it is sufficient to subscribe to the services to obtain security updates free of charge, the subscription must last for the duration of the extension of the support otherwise the updates will not be distributed on the systems.

The cost to access the suitable subscriptions is at least $25 a year (for each system that uses Windows 7), with the figure doubling every year for the next three years. Those who register with Windows Virtual Desktop, on the other hand, can get all three years of extension of security updates for free.
