Google Chrome adds the global video playback / pause feature

Google is testing a new feature that will allow you to have control over the media we’re listening to / seeing from any Chrome tab so you don’t always have to go back to the page that is playing the content to play or pause the video.

Google may soon add a play / pause button to its Chrome browser, which would make it possible to pause or play videos from any tab. At the moment, the function is still in the test and development phase on the Chrome channel of Chrome, or Canary, and the name at this time is Global Media Controls.

Once the new multimedia control function is activated, a playback icon will appear to the right of the URL, if there is a video or audio played on another browser tab. Clicking on it opens a wider control that allows you to pause, play, skip forward or backward without actually being on the card where the multimedia content is playing.

The function could be particularly useful for interrupting any annoying autoplay video or for checking a YouTube video. This new feature would replace the old feature, recently removed, which allowed you to deactivate the tabs by clicking on the speaker icon. It is still possible to right-click on a tab to permanently deactivate a site, but it is not comfortable that it was previously.

The new Global Media Controls feature is only available on the Canary version of Chrome, which can be installed from this link; it will be necessary, once the new ” beta ” browser is installed, to activate the following flag: chrome: // flags / # global-media-controls.

The new function still has a lot of bugs, at the moment it will be checked both the audio and the video, but only on some sites. We trust that Google will be able to implement the function that we believe can be convenient in many situations.
