Intel teams up with Mediatek to bring 5G to Notebooks

The two companies announce a collaboration that should accelerate the adoption of 5G connectivity also within PC platforms.

Intel and Mediatek join forces to promote the spread of 5G modems within the laptops of the near future. The second will develop 5G modem solutions, which will later be certified by Intel for use within its PC systems.

It is interesting to highlight how Intel has long worked on the development of its own 5G modem solution, without being able to obtain a product ready for marketing. The company later sold its 5G division to Apple, a company that will still rely on Qualcomm solutions to be able to integrate 5G connectivity within its smartphone products.

The availability of 5G connectivity is destined to change the methods of use not only of smartphones but also of notebook PC. This is an area in which the potential of 5G technology in terms of higher data transmission speed seems to be even more important, allowing PC not only to always be connected but also to do it with performance that should not make you regret WiFi connectivity.

The terms of the announcement suggest that what Mediatek proposes may fall into the category of so-called semi-custom products, developed by Mediatek internally but with a direct influence by the client Intel. Mediatek will follow the hardware development while Intel is delegated the integration with the platform and the development of the drivers for the operating system.

In any case, we will have to wait for a little longer: Intel predicts that the first notebooks based on Mediatek 5G modems will debut with HP and Dell products during the first part of 2021.
