Kaspersky released a free tool against ransomware CoinVault

The victims of the ransomware CoinVault might have some more opportunities to recover their data through a tool provided by Kaspersky, thanks to the recovery of a database of encryption keys by the Dutch police.

One of the more subtle technological threats in circulation for some time are the ransomware: it is malware that encrypts all data on the hard disk and asks for a ransom in exchange for the encryption key that allows the victim to regain possession of their data.

Who found himself reluctantly a victim of CoinVault ransomware might now be able to recover their data without having to pay the ransom to the criminals, thanks to a free tool released by Kaspersky Lab together with the National High Tech Crime Unit of the Dutch police.

The application was made after the police failed to find, during an investigation, a server command-control of CoinVault containing a database of encryption keys. Obviously, the tool cannot offer any guarantee of full effect, but with the progress of the investigations, the police hope to discover other keys that allow then to raise the chances of effectiveness of the instrument.

The Dutch police also encouraged the public to report incidents of this type, because right from the complaint of a citizen have started the investigation that led to the discovery of keys and a possible suspect behind CoinVault.
