Toshiba Canvio AEROCAST: The external drive with Wi-Fi and battery, now has 1TB of capacity

Officially introduced a new external hard drive from Toshiba, which boasts Wi-Fi connectivity and the presence of an internal battery, as already seen on Canvio AeroMobile SSD. If Canvio AEROCAST, we find a mechanical hard drive for greater capacity.

We have already had occasion to speak of Toshiba Canvio AeroMobile SSD, presented by the company in early September during IFA in Berlin. This premise serves to better delineate the product presented today, which differs in one important characteristic, namely the use of a mechanical hard disk in place of Solid State Drive. We do offer a brief summary of what these solutions.

Aesthetically, we are faced with a normal external hard drive, 2.5-inch in size, but in terms of functionality we can think of something more like a wireless NAS. In addition to functioning as a normal external hard drive, Canvio AeroMobile AEROCAST SSD and have wireless connectivity, effectively creating a kind of network you can connect up to 8 devices.

Not only these units also feature internal lithium battery, so as to be used on the move (for example in a backpack), integrating also a card reader SD enabled for automatic backup of the photos on the memory card.

Through a dedicated app (iOS and Android) you can access Canvio AeroMobile AEROCAST SSD and also from smartphones and tablets, while the integrated USB 3.0 port serves as both a normal PC connection, either from the internal battery charger. Toshiba, in essence, alongside the first model presented a new model based on mechanical hard drive as well 1 TB, allowing users the choice.

Obviously, the SSD will be more resistant to shocks and with greater autonomy (8 hours), but paying a price in terms of capacity, 128GB. Toshiba Canvio AEROCAST can operate for five hours before being recharged and must surely more care in transporting it, but it has a much higher capacity.

Of note is also the functionality Internet Pass-Thru Mode, with which you can surf the net and access the Canvio AEROCAST simultaneously. To explain better: accessing from tablet, smartphone or PC there is ” burning ” the only Wi-Fi is available only to connect to the disc, as thanks to the pass-thru mode it can be simultaneously connected to both the normal home network, or business that is, but also to the disk that acts as a bridge.

Toshiba’s move can be read in two different ways. The first is obviously to offer an extra option to the user, for which 128GB could not be enough. The other is positioning on the shelves: a lot of people, the less informed, probably does not explain why an external drive by ” only ” 128GB can cost around 150 euros, not considering that inside there is a SSD (we refer to model Canvio AeroMobile SSD).

Now Toshiba can splurge on the shelves a record that if the play in terms of capacity with others, with all the advanced features specific to this model. The price has not been released yet, but it certainly will not differ too much from the solutions with mechanical hard drive of equal capacity positioned at the high end, justified with high technological content.
