DJI Ronin-SC: The new gimbal for mirrorless cameras

The new DJI Ronin-SC is a gimbal that was designed for mirrorless cameras. New features while maintaining a common base with the previous Ronin-S (which instead aimed at reflex cameras). Here are the features.

DJI Ronin-SC is the latest product launched by the Chinese company that once again aims at professionals with this portable camera stabilizer. Here’s what you need to know about this new device.

This gimbal has a three-axis stabilization mechanism and is designed to be used primarily with mirrorless cameras. The new DJI Ronin-SC is compact in size but also light, so that it can be held with one hand, simplifying its use.

DJI Ronin-SC: The technical features

Weighing 4.41 pounds it is 41% lighter than the previous Ronin-S which instead focused more on reflex cameras (but we know that the market is looking the other way). To succeed in the operation, materials such as magnesium, steel, aluminum and composite plastic were used: all to aim for lightness and strength. All with dimensions of 14.6 x 4.1 x 13.2 inches.

The motors support the movement of weights up to 4 pounds (according to the manufacturer’s tests) while the 2,450 mAh battery should guarantee up to 11 hours of autonomy. There is no lack of advanced features for stabilization management such as 3-axis locking (pan, tilt and roll) allowing the user to customize its use.

One of the novelties, which speeds up use, is the storage of the position. If you disassemble the camera and replace it (after balancing the gimbal), DJI Ronin-SC will remember how the previous settings were, allowing you to start working right away.

The joystick is not missing to manage the stabilization so as to give maximum support to the user. With the latter, it is possible to select modes like the Sport one but also the new ActiveTrack 3.0 and Force Mobile. The first allows, via the tablet and smartphone camera, to select a subject so that it is tracked by the gimbal.

The second one instead synchronizes the smartphone’s movements with those of the gimbal up to 25 meters via Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity (functionality similar to Force Pro). There is also a virtual joystick, timelapse, motion control and panorama.

The new DJI Ronin-SC has a price of $439 in the basic version while the Combo version reaches $539 and includes several accessories in the package. Availability is immediate but stocks may be reduced.
