Lumix GX9: Top of Panasonic technology in a compact and convenient format

MQT sensor 20 Mpixel without LPF, Bluetooth, new 5-axis stabilizer and new functions 4K Photo the salient features of the new model.

On the tenth anniversary of the birth of the mirrorless (introduced in 2008 with the now historic G1), Panasonic announces the new Lumix DC-GX9, Micro Four Thirds that brings Panasonic’s cutting-edge technology into a compact and attractive body.

Constructively, this line is characterized by the peculiar adjustable sight, which goes from horizontal to vertical (80°) to allow shooting from below with EFV. In the specific case, the GX9 adopts a new 2.76M OLED point characterized by a good magnification ratio (1.39x, equal to about 0.7x in the 35mm format), even if unfortunately the eye-point is a bit reduced: 17.5mm.

Panasonic Lumix GX9Unlike the previous model, the rear screen (LCD 3″ , 1.24M dots) can now be adjusted from -45° to +80°, which gives the GX9 an uncommon flexibility.

Under the bonnet, the GX9 closely resembles the GX8, which already adopted the current nominal 20.3 Mpixel sensor and the image processor itself. The Lumix GX9 does not represent a revolution, but an aging.

The sensor, we said, is the same as the Lumix GX8, but in the case of the GX9 has been eliminated the optical low-pass filter, with the positive consequences in terms of clarity and, in the case of Panasonic, even noise – having to ” push ” less sharpness, the Panasonic engineers have revised downward some development parameters, with the result of bringing out less artifacts.

But what kind of world would it be without a little grain, at least in black and white images. Here, that with a real noise slightly reduced, Panasonic introduces the new effect L.Monochrome D ” Grain Effect ” – do not say that the manufacturer does not think of everyone!

Going beyond the easy irony, we have been able to observe the effects of this filter, and we must say that the final result is actually very natural and ” analogical “; that is, it remembers very closely the grain of the silver halides of the films.

The ISO range (ISO 200-25,600 with the possibility of reaching ISO 100in extension) and the AF system, which remains the well-known Panasonic DFD, is unaffected. Slightly increased the shooting cadence, which goes from 8 to 9 fps in single AF mode, but maintaining the maximum limit of 6 fps in continuous AF mode.

The Dual IS 5-axis stabilization system was introduced, currently the state of the art Panasonic, Bluetooth connectivity, and a small integrated flash absent in the previous model. In addition, an optional hand grip (DMW-HGR2) is now available which, for those who want it, is also backwards compatible with the GX80 / 85.

Not everything, unfortunately, has been improved: the body is no longer proof of dust and splashes of water, and the shutter, which on the previous model reached 1/8000s, now stops at 1/4000s.

Panasonic Lumix GX9This is also due to the fact that the mechanism for moving the curtains has now been revised, now electromagnetically controlled, which reduces significantly the vibrations induced at the end of the stroke, favoring the shutter with mechanical shutter even in the case of prolonged laying times.

Lastly, the efforts made to make the 4K Photo technology more enjoyable (yes, due to the required calculation power and thermal dissipation, the 6K is reserved for the higher models). One of the ” problems ” of this technology, so to speak, is that after shooting there is a large number of frames to be analyzed in-camera.

The Lumix GX9 facilitates the task by identifying and marking the sequence frames during which there has been movement. Furthermore, a new, interesting function has been added: the multiple shot. It is now possible to combine from 3 to 40 4K photo frames in a single image, thus obtaining, due to the high shooting cadence, a sequence effect for the framed subject.
