Acer Nitro N50-600: Economic gaming computer for everyone

We had in the newsroom for a few days the Acer Nitro N50-600, a cheap gaming computer without too many frills. Here are our first impressions.

With the Acer Nitro N50-600 series wants to cover a different market range compared to Predator Orion products, which are aimed at more demanding users looking for superior performance and attention to detail.

If the Predator products represent the high end of the manufacturer, Acer Nitro N50-600 covers different needs and occupies the entry-level range up to the average, depending on the technical characteristics integrated. Both families have one thing in common: they appeal to the passionate video gamer.

We had the opportunity to test Acer Nitro N50-600 for a few hours and get an idea of the manufacturer’s proposal as desktop gaming. The model we had on trial has a street-price, at the time of writing and is higher than the entry-level because of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 video card, higher than the GTX 1050 proposed in the model basis. In this family, we can find solutions with Intel Core i3-8100, i5-8400 or i7-8700, all then equipped with the eighth-generation architecture.

Acer Nitro N50-600At first glance Acer Nitro N50-600 looks like a desktop with a compact size that can be conveniently placed on the desk next to the monitor: the height is 340 mm, while the width of 163 mm with a depth of 350 mm.

  • 8th Generation Intel Core i5-8400 Processor (Up to 4.0GHz)
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Graphics with 4GB GDDR5 Video Memory (1 x Display Port, 1...
  • 8GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM (expandable to 64GB), 8X DVD-Writer Double-Layer Drive (DVD-RW)...

Not even the weight is excessive, for a product that can be easily transported if you want to participate in a gaming session with friends (presence: a dear, old LAN Party). The aspect is taken care of to give immediately the idea of being in front of a video game system, in no uncertain terms.

All models of the family use the same case that brings out the entry-level nature of the product: some solutions give the idea of ” cheap ” and little attention to detail, and others have not convinced us much in terms of robustness.

Forget the tempered glass that today can be found on virtually all price ranges, Nitro N50-600 looks like an essential case, and cannot do much LED along the front (strictly red, like other details of the case). The panel is made of plastic and contains an optical drive with vertical tray.

Along the front panel, we have a USB 3.0 port, a reversible USB Type-C, dedicated ports for headphones and microphone, and an SD memory card reader. At the top is the Acer logo, below that related to the series of gaming products, Nitro.

The two side panels are both fairly anonymous, similar to those we can find in very low-end homes: they do not have transparent parts, not even in plexiglass, and they do not let you see what’s inside.

The same lack of attention to detail is dedicated to the rear, which looks like that of a ” standard ” economic case. There are a wide range of ports: we have as many as six USB (including two 3.0), an Ethernet port, audio ports for connecting microphones or sound systems, and an HDMI connected to the integrated Intel GPU, in addition to the ports for monitors present along the video card bracket. Opening one of the side panels (just unscrew two screws) leads to the internal components, this too is not too well taken care.

Concurrently with the video card, we find a large air conveyor that pushes the hot one outwards, while on the CPU we find a heatsink with a fairly voluminous fan, which is quite silent in idle (but not inaudible) and with full load CPU. The aesthetic components are not very accurate, and for the logic boards, the standard green has been chosen without any more sophisticated solutions. In short, there are no frills but only substance to keep the price low, which is not necessarily bad.

On the positive side, Nitro N50-600 allows a good margin regarding the updating of the components, which can be replaced according to their compatibility. On the model we received, we also found a PSU LiteON 500W, while the memory side is completed with 16 GB of RAM (on a banquet), 256 GB SSD for OS, main programs, and games, and a 1 TB HDD, for all the rest. The system comes with Windows 10 Home, and as a GPU you can choose between a GeForce GTX 1050 or a GeForce GTX 1060.

Acer has also sent us the Nitro RG270 monitor, as an ideal candidate to be put alongside Nitro N50-600. This is an entry-level monitor designed for video games: even here it would be too much to expect a breathtaking image quality. It is a monitor that does its duty: it costs little but has excellent viewing angles thanks to the IPS panel, offers a maximum brightness of 250 cd/m², and the refresh rate is 75 Hz.

Acer Nitro RG270Acer Nitro N50-600 is a desktop computer for video games that in the declination with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB GPU can give some satisfaction to those who do not require extreme performance by being satisfied with the Full HD resolution with some small sacrifice regarding the graphic details.

It is clear that in the attempt to keep production costs low we have made some sacrifices: the aesthetic part is not particularly accurate, for a product that manifests itself in all its simplicity (perhaps too much) right from the first approach.

All with a price to the public that is in line with other proposals of the competition already assembled and ready for use. What is certain is that trespassing in the ” do-it-yourself ” the change changes: assembling a PC with similar technical characteristics, and a more manicured case, you spend a few hundred dollars less.
